I ask a different question: what would your ideal day here look like? A slow morning on a sandy beach? Exploring whitewashed villages? Wine tastings, long lunches, boat trips, or a little of everything?

I live in Puglia and plan holidays here for travellers. Over the years, I have seen the same mistake repeated: people book a beautiful villa or hotel, then discover that the beach they really wanted is an hour away. These are the five tips I would give you before you book anything.

1. Choose your area before you choose your airport

Puglia has two main airports for international visitors: Bari and Brindisi. But landing in Bari does not mean you must stay around Bari, and flying to Brindisi does not automatically make southern Salento your best base. What matters is the journey to your actual accommodation.

Bari often works well for Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Alberobello, parts of Valle d’Itria and northern itineraries.

Brindisi is frequently more convenient for Lecce, Otranto, southern Salento, Ostuni and parts of the Ionian coast.

Manduria and San Pietro in Bevagna sit outside the classic airport-to-resort pattern. For these areas I compare both airports, flight arrival times and the practical transfer or car-rental options.

My advice: do not choose a flight just because it saves €30. A late arrival, a longer drive or an extra transfer can quickly cancel that saving. With small children, arrival time matters even more.

Before booking, check the journey to the property, car collection hours and how you will reach the airport for your return flight. Current airport and train information is available from Aeroporti di Puglia and Trenitalia.

2. Decide whether you really need a car

I used to say that Puglia was impossible without a car. That is no longer a useful blanket rule. You can absolutely enjoy Puglia without driving if you stay in a well-connected town such as Bari, Monopoli or Polignano a Mare and build your itinerary around the Adriatic railway line.

But a car changes the experience if you want to visit different beaches, stay in a masseria among olive trees, explore wineries or reach smaller Salento villages. On the Ionian coast, the distances between your house, supermarket, restaurant and favourite beach can be much less walkable than they look on a map.

When a rental car makes sense

You are staying in a countryside masseria or a villa outside town.

You want to explore several beaches instead of using just one.

You are travelling with children or a group and have beach equipment to carry.

You want countryside dinners and tastings — in which case you should arrange a driver or transfer for evenings involving alcohol.

For summer, reserve a car early and check the deposit, insurance and child-seat conditions. Watch for ZTL signs in historic centres: restricted-traffic zones can apply even when your navigation app suggests driving straight through.

3. Choose a coastline, not just ‘Puglia’

Puglia has two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian. Yet the difference is not simply the name of the water. Think about the type of coast you enjoy: a broad sandy beach with a gentle entry, a small rocky cove, a serviced beach club or a natural stretch with almost no facilities.

The Adriatic: lively towns, walks and varied coves

Monopoli is an excellent base if you want restaurants, evening walks and a train station. There are small town beaches and longer sandy stretches further south. Polignano a Mare is spectacular to look at, but its famous Lama Monachile is not automatically the beach I would choose for a whole day with a pushchair and bags.

For a mix of coast and countryside hotels, also look around Fasano and Ostuni. Remember that Ostuni’s old town sits on a hill: staying in the historic centre is not the same as staying by the sea.

The Ionian coast: sand, long beaches and family holidays

When a family tells me, ‘We simply want a lovely sandy beach where the children can play for hours,’ I often start with the Ionian coast: San Pietro in Bevagna, Campomarino di Maruggio, Torre Lapillo and Punta Prosciutto. These areas offer extensive sandy stretches, but the popular spots are certainly not deserted in July and August.

Gallipoli is a good choice if you enjoy a lively summer atmosphere. Further south, around Pescoluse, you will also find beautiful sandy beaches — and plenty of people in peak season. ‘Quiet’ always depends on the exact location and week.

What about villages, vineyards and the countryside?

You can base yourself in Valle d’Itria or near Manduria and drive to the sea. These are two different versions of Puglia. Valle d’Itria is about trulli, Locorotondo, Cisternino and rural landscapes; Manduria is about Primitivo di Manduria vineyards, olive groves and the Ionian coast. I love both, but I would not pretend they offer exactly the same holiday.

For a closer look at wine country, read my guide to Manduria.

Choose accommodation for the holiday you actually want

For a couple who want to walk out to dinner every evening, I often suggest a small hotel or apartment in Monopoli. For two people dreaming of quiet countryside, a masseria may be perfect. For a family or group who mainly want the sea, a private home with a kitchen and outdoor space can be much more practical.

For example, Villa Due Fichi near San Pietro in Bevagna offers three bedrooms, space for up to seven guests, a private 8 × 4 m pool and a sandy beach about 800 metres away. It is a beach-holiday alternative to a countryside masseria, not a base I would recommend for daily strolls around Ostuni. For other options, see my Puglia accommodation selection.

4. Learn a little Italian — and ask questions

English is widely used in many hotels and tourism businesses. But a few Italian words still make a difference in a small bakery, market or family-run trattoria. You do not need to be fluent. Often a smile and a sincere attempt are enough.

Buongiorno! — Good morning / good day.

Un tavolo per quattro, per favore. — A table for four, please.

C’è un parcheggio vicino? — Is there parking nearby?

È possibile prenotare? — Is it possible to book?

Abbiamo un bambino piccolo. — We have a small child.

I love this personal side of Puglia. But for allergies, medical issues or child safety, use an accurate translation and confirm that the other person has understood you.

5. Match the season to your idea of a holiday

May and early June

Lovely for walking, towns, food and countryside experiences. The sea may still feel cool, and some beach clubs and seasonal restaurants are not fully open. I would never promise summer swimming conditions this early.

Late June and September

Often my favourite balance between beach time and crowds. Weather is never guaranteed, but September can be a very pleasant month to combine swimming with exploring. Some summer services begin closing towards the end of the month.

July and August

The full Italian summer: beaches, evening strolls, events, restaurants and a lively atmosphere. It also means traffic, busy beaches, higher accommodation costs and more difficult parking. The period around Ferragosto on 15 August is especially busy. I would book accommodation and a rental car well ahead.

October and the off-season

Puglia does not disappear when beach clubs close. October can be wonderful for towns, wine, olive oil and slower road trips. It is simply a different holiday, with fewer seasonal services and no promise of summer sea temperatures.

Three easy ways to plan your first itinerary

5–7 days without a car: stay in Monopoli or Bari, explore Polignano and nearby towns by train, plan transport carefully for Alberobello and spend a couple of days by the sea.

7–10 days focused on beaches: rent a home on the Ionian coast, enjoy the sea most days, add Manduria, a winery and one longer trip to Lecce or another town.

10–14 days with a car: split your stay between the Adriatic/Valle d’Itria and the Ionian coast. You will spend less time on repeated long drives.

Frequently asked questions

Where should first-time visitors stay?

For towns and train trips, I would consider Monopoli or Bari. For a sandy beach close to the house, I would choose a specific stretch of the Ionian coast. There is no single best base for everyone.

Can I see both coasts in one week?

Yes, but daily long drives become tiring. I prefer one well-chosen base or two short stays if experiencing both sides of Puglia matters to you.

Should I book accommodation in the old town?

For a couple without a car, often yes. For a family with a pushchair, beach bags and a rental car, not always: stairs, ZTL restrictions and parking can matter more than a photogenic balcony.

Would you rather have the holiday planned around you?

My work as a Vacation Planner in Puglia is not simply sending links to attractive villas. I help choose the right area, check accommodation, connect it to the beaches and your itinerary, and arrange transfers, restaurants, wineries and activities. The goal is a holiday that works for you, not just one that looks good in photographs.

Explore villas and other places to stay in Puglia, or send me your dates, group size and three most important wishes. That is where I like to begin.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[344

post-4843","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-my-puglia

How to Plan a Trip to Puglia: 5 Local Tips for 2026 –
